The transition from short films to feature films presents significant challenges for new directors, including issues related to funding, the creative environment, and the film industry ecosystem.
Many film school graduates face pressure to quickly begin feature filmmaking. Fiona’s debut feature, American Girl, evolved from her short film Jie Jie, with just five days to develop an outline for submission to the Golden Horse Film Project Promotion.
Many debut works nominated for the Asian New Talent Award also originated from short film budgets or graduation projects. Some blend narrative and documentary elements, experimenting with improvisation to explore characters, while overcoming traditional funding constraints. Short films demand concise storytelling, while feature films offer more creative freedom to showcase personal style and ideas, albeit with higher stakes in funding and production time.
Ultimately, filmmakers navigate diverse ecosystems and funding models, maintaining their unique voices and creative independence. This journey allows them to craft meaningful works that can go far and inspire others.
